According to Ayurvedic tradition health is the balance of elements air, earth, fire, and water-and illness is as excess or deficiency of any particular element. Ayurveda treats illness at its source, rather than at the level of symptoms, and helps an in individual to take responsibility for their own health and well-being

According to Ayurveda three things are responsible for the health of any human being i.e., Vata (wind), Pitta (bile) and Kapha (phlegm). Vata is a combination of the two elements of the universe, namely air and ether. Pitta is an amalgam of fire and earth and Kapha is the combination of ether and water. Of these three Vata occupies a prominent position. Health, according to Ayurveda , is a state of balance of the three doshas and also a condition in which the three aspects of human being - body, mind, and the soul are in a natural state. When this natural state comes into contact with unhappiness disease errupts.

Key Concepts of Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, digestion is the cornerstone of health. Good digestion nourishes the body. Eating the proper foods will make a big difference in your well being. There are two aspects to the food and nutrition in Ayurveda. One is the physical food you eat, digest, and assimilate. In this process, the organs of your digestive system has a big role. The second aspect of it is what you consume through your mind-body. What you see, hear, taste, smell, feel, and think are all important for your well being and impact your health considerably. For example, stress plays a key role in the health. Ayurveda had recognized the importance of the environment in the total health. Remember, everything in your environment is composed of doshas that interact with your own doshas. You are affected by everything else which goes on in this universe as you are part and parcel of this cosmos. Thus we have the "big picture" or "holistic outlook" in Ayurveda.

Why is Ayurveda becoming more and more popular in the western world?

Ayurvedic science though ancient, could not be more relevant to today's medical challenges and needs. In fact along with Buddhism it is the fastest growing belief system in the West. In ancient India, Buddhism enriched the Ayurvedic system and took it to the masses. Ayurveda is becoming so popular because it complements western medicine and Ayurveda understands how and why we become ill. It can offer effective treatment for many conditions for which conventional medicine has not found cure.

Ayurveda is a traditional holistic health care system, older than any other system of medicine, which has been practiced in India for more than 5000 years. It represents the science of life and longevity originating in the Vedic traditions of India. This ancient Indian medicine seeks to reestablish the harmony between the body and its habitat by creating the optimum health environment. It believes in detoxifying the body as a prelude to strengthening the immune system.

Ayurveda has a vegetarian outlook and what makes it so unique is the fact that it prevents and cures ailments without any side effects on the human body. The ultimate goal of Ayurveda is to create a state of holistic health for the individual, to create, consequently, a healthy society and environment with its herbal health remedies.

The urbanization of life style has had its impact on most of us. As per the principles of ayurveda, this increases the quantity of diseases causing substances, called malas. Activity is always good for the body but, as the pace of life overtakes human ambitions, a person becomes ill at ease while trying to keep pace. He/she faces diseases like Stress, Strain, Depression, Arthritis, Asthma, Obesity, Diabetes, Cancer, etc.

In other words, de-generative diseases set in, slow the pace and defeat the purpose of his/her life. Throughout our life span, tissues and cells are destroyed by the body and replaced again by newer ones. With age however, the replacement is negligible leading to health problems. One ailment leads to another causing a cascading effect and disorders.
